What are the side effects of Botox?
The most common side effect of Botox injections is bruising around the injection site if a vein is inadvertently punctured. Many veins are too small or too deep to see so this can happen in the best of circumstances. The bruise will usually resolve fully by two weeks. Coverup make ups like Dermablend are effective at camouflaging the bruise.
Another complication is headache which occurs in a very small percentage of Botox patients. Just because you’ve had a headache with one injection doesn’t mean this will occur each time you have Botox.
Eye muscle weakness can occur if the Botox migrates after injection into the ocular muscles. This can be avoided by choosing an experienced injector since injection technique is important in positioning the product. In addition, do not rub your eyes for 12 hours after the session to avoid moving the Botox to another area.
Other muscle weakness can occur depending upon where the Botox is injected; for instance, neck muscle weakness or even muscles of swallowing can be affected if too much Botox is injected in the neck muscle bands.
Finally, patients with a history of muscle weakness conditions such as myasthenia gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome or Guillain-Barre syndrome should avoid Botox injections since additional muscle weakness could lead to serious consequences.
