Melanoma Detection
Malignant melanoma is one of the most deadly of all skin cancers. It can develop in a pre existing mole or arise on normal skin. Most melanomas occur on the trunk or extremities, not on the face or hands which are more sun-exposed. Melanoma is suspected in lesions that are enlarging, asymmetrical with irregular borders, and darkly or irregularly pigmented. A biopsy of any suspected melanoma should be performed without delay since surgical removal of this type of cancer can result in a cure if done on an early lesion. Annual skin cancer screening by a dermatologist and monthly self checkups are the best way to diagnose melanoma early enough to save a life.
