Lip Augmentation
Lip Augmentation with Juvederm

What is used for lip augmentation?

Juvederm is a filler derived from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the skin.  Another hyaluronic acid filler is Restylane.  Both have been used for several years in the U.S. for lip augmentation and filling wrinkles around the mouth.

Is the procedure painful?

For lip augmentation, the client is premedicated with dental anesthesia by injecting lidocaine around the nerves which supply the mouth and lower jaw.  Numbness usually occurs within 20 minutes and when this is complete, Juvederm is injected into the lips to give the desired fullness.  Usually one or two syringes are required.

Are there side effects?

The most common side effect is bruising because the lips are well-endowed with blood vessels.  This may last 2-3 weeks so be sure to schedule your appointment well in advance of upcoming social engagements. Bruising is more likely to occur if you have taken aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, or Alleve within 2 weeks of the injection, so it's best to avoid these for two weeks prior to your Juvederm injection.  If you develop a bruised area, treatment with Homeopathic Arnica or Arnica cream can speed clearing, as can eating fresh, raw pineapple every day.

Other side effects are pain and swelling, which are temporary but can last for several days.  Ice packs and Extra Strength Tylenol are beneficial in treating these symptoms.

Rarely, small bumps can form in the lips.  These are best treated with gentle massage and they usually resolve within a few weeks.

How long does it last?

Lip fullness remains for at least 6 months in most cases and can last a year before another treatment is required.
